Bio
Joa Vilallonga is a Peruvian-American contemporary artist currently based in Florida. She trained at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Lima and at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where she earned a BFA in Illustration (summa cum laude).
Working across painting, sculpture, and poetry, her figurative practice is rooted in portraiture, which has remained central to her work since childhood and is approached as a space of intimacy and emotional resonance. Her use of soft, pastel-inflected palettes contributes to the quiet, hushed atmosphere that defines her visual language.
Statement
I paint moments that exist between thought and feeling; states that can feel calm yet difficult to define. My work does not build narratives; it remains open to stillness as an active condition, allowing the viewer to approach the painting without explanation or instruction.
Natural phenomena such as water, wind, gravity, or light are present in my work as a representation of emotion or silent interiority. Their qualities mirror the constant flux of inner climates. Within this space, things remain unresolved, open, and suspended, allowing perception to deepen and time to slow.
I often include animals and small natural forms in my art, sometimes as anchors or sometimes as echoes of what cannot be spoken directly or what a face alone cannot contain.
Through painting, I work to generate a soft pull; a place that invites the viewer to linger and recognize something familiar, even if it resists definition.
